The possibility mentioned by TechCrunch would fit within the iCloud+ universe, the subscription offering Apple already uses to charge for storage and several services associated with the iCloud account. This choice would have a clear economic rationale: generative AI is not limited to a software feature distributed once and for all with an operating system. When it relies on large-scale models, data centers, repeated processing, or complex queries, its cost rises with use. The model of a service included with the device could then give way to a multi-tier offering.

However, it is important to distinguish what has been reported from what has been confirmed. Apple has not announced a paid AI Siri plan. No price, launch date, usage limit, or final list of features reserved for subscribers has been published. TechCrunch refers to a possibility being considered for the most demanding users, not an officially presented commercial product. This nuance is decisive in a matter where the timetable for Siri's evolution has already been fluid and where Apple usually retains control over its product announcements.

From Siri, a system feature, to Siri, a gateway to AI

Siri occupies a particular place in Apple's recent history. The assistant was introduced with the iPhone 4S in 2011, after Apple's acquisition of the Siri company. The group is not merely presenting a chatbot separate from its products: it is seeking to integrate generative functions into the operating system, writing tools, notifications, applications, and the assistant. Siri is therefore set to become a central interface for these functions. The apparent free nature of a system feature does not mean it comes at no cost to its publisher. Until now, Apple could integrate most Siri functions into the device experience without presenting the user with a request counter or a consumption level. This wording leaves several commercial architectures open. Apple could, for example, keep basic Siri functions accessible to all owners of compatible devices and place behind a subscription higher usage volumes, more complex tasks, or options requiring more remote processing. Monetizing cloud computing does not therefore, in itself, mean a change of model toward advertising or the commercial exploitation of conversations.

Apple has also built a large part of its services revenue on mechanisms other than conversational advertising: iCloud storage, music, video, games, warranties, payments, and commissions. An integration into iCloud+ would be consistent with this subscription culture, without making it possible to conclude what the final form of the product would be. Generative computing is pushing the industry toward subscriptions

The Apple hypothesis fits into a broader evolution of the generative AI market. The players that popularized conversational assistants have widely adopted a freemium model: a free version provides access to part of the service, while subscriptions raise limits, add tools, or provide access to more powerful models. This choice addresses a simple problem: using a model hosted on servers has a recurring cost, whereas traditional software can often be downloaded and run without a comparable marginal cost for each interaction.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Plus in 2023 at a price of $20 per month in the United States. The offering was presented with benefits such as priority access during periods of high demand, faster responses, and early access to new features. ChatGPT's free offering continued to exist. The model illustrates a now familiar logic: maintaining a no-payment entry point while having users who expect more capacity or better availability contribute.

Google has also marketed subscriptions tied to its generative AI. In the United States, Google One AI Premium, later renamed Google AI Pro, was notably offered at $19.99 per month and associated with Gemini as well as storage capabilities. The comparison with the iCloud+ possibility reported by TechCrunch is interesting in principle, not in detail: Google has already tied AI services to a cloud storage offering, while Apple could consider relying on its own iCloud+ subscription. The offerings, countries, and features are not identical.

Microsoft launched Copilot Pro in 2024 at $20 per user per month, with access to Copilot in certain Microsoft 365 applications for eligible subscribers, as well as model access benefits. Here again, the group is not charging only for an isolated chatbot: it is selling an AI layer embedded in an existing software environment. This logic is particularly relevant to understanding what is at stake for Apple. It should nevertheless be recalled that local computing remains a decisive component of Apple's strategy. Devices compatible with Apple Intelligence are designed to perform part of the tasks directly on the device. This approach can limit recourse to the cloud for certain functions, reduce latency, and address privacy concerns. It can also create differentiation between devices according to their power. A possible subscription would not necessarily replace the value of recent hardware; it could instead complement a strategy in which the device handles routine operations and the cloud takes over for heavier requests.

An industrial and regulatory issue for Apple, Europe, and France

For Apple, the pricing issue cannot be separated from the international rollout of Apple Intelligence. The announcements of 2024 showed that the company's AI capabilities are not necessarily available everywhere at the same time, nor in all languages at launch. Localizing AI does not consist of translating menus: it involves taking into account linguistic understanding, local uses, data protection rules, service availability, and regulatory constraints.

France and the European Union occupy a particular position. Apple announced in 2024 that Apple Intelligence would not be immediately available to European Union users due to uncertainties related to the Digital Markets Act, before subsequently communicating availability in the EU from April 2025 for certain languages and certain devices. These stages illustrate the difficulties of a uniform rollout. They do not make it possible to predict the availability in France of a potential AI Siri subscription, whose existence Apple has not confirmed.

For French-speaking users, two issues would therefore need to be monitored if the project materialized: language and functional parity. A paid plan would only be truly comparable to that offered on the U.S. market if advanced capabilities were available in French, under the same quality conditions, and on the same categories of compatible devices. These elements concern the architecture announced by Apple, not a potential paid plan. But they indicate that any pricing evolution will be assessed in Europe not only in terms of its price, but also its data safeguards.

The possible link to iCloud+ also raises a question of commercial clarity. Digital subscriptions are often criticized when they become difficult to distinguish or when consumers do not know exactly which function they are funding. If Apple were to charge for AI power, the company would have to explain what the subscriber concretely receives: more requests, specific tools, faster execution, analysis capabilities, or another form of service. Without this clarity, the abstract term “computing” risks speaking more to engineers than to the general public.

For French companies, the prospect can be read differently. Fleets of iPhones, iPads, and Macs are present in many sectors, but purchases are often centralized and subject to security, budget, and governance constraints. An integrated assistant that summarizes content, prepares communications, or automates actions may offer productivity benefits. An individual subscription tied to iCloud+, on the other hand, would not necessarily match organizations' purchasing arrangements. Apple has given no indication of a professional AI Siri offering; it should therefore not be assumed that a potential consumer tier would be suitable for businesses.

The debate over costs could also strengthen attention to local and European alternatives. French companies such as Mistral AI are developing generative models, while major U.S. providers already offer cloud services and paid assistants. The issue is not solely the nationality of a model: it concerns hosting, terms of use, privacy, integration with the workstation, and total cost. Apple's potential initiative would add another offering in a market where IT departments are already seeking to arbitrate among subscriptions, licenses, and cloud consumption.

For consumers, finally, the risk of fragmentation is real. A household may already pay for storage, music, video, office software, and one or more AI assistants. An extra Siri charge could be acceptable if it replaces separate services or provides markedly superior integration. It could be harder to justify if it merely adds a subscription layer to limited functions. The value of integrated AI will depend less on its spectacular nature than on its everyday reliability, its availability in French, and its ability to save time without creating additional complexity.

The real test: setting a credible boundary between included AI and billed AI

TechCrunch's report above all raises a strategic question: what part of a phone's intelligence should be included in the purchase of the phone, and what part can become a service billed over time? Apple is not the first company facing this dilemma, but its case is particularly visible because Siri has been part of the iPhone experience for more than a decade. The arrival of generative models and cloud processing may make the subscription model economically rational; it does not guarantee user acceptance.

The answer will depend on the scope of free functions. If everyday requests, device controls, and basic interactions remain fully accessible, a computing tier could be presented as an extension for the most demanding tasks.
